Life in Alps – The Biophilia Experience

Dedicated with love to our EARTH that sustains and nurtures lives (Happy Belated Earth Day). This written piece of craft dives into the beauty of EARTH’s heart to explore and unfold astonishing stories from Alps. With climate change and melting ice in the backdrop, it reminds and encourages one to respect and love the resources of nature and Earth. The stunning beauty of Alps offers an opportunity to experience the biophilia effect through explorations of Alps and embrace the struggles of life at large.

Mesmerizing Views

Inspired by the transformational journey of Alps from freezing winters to splashing springs (Source: Nat Geo Wild, 2022) this narrative showcases the rugged and powerful changes that different seasons and weathers bring in the Alps (and other mountainous regions) that preserve infinite surprises for one to experience, explore and embrace.

The transition of snow-covered peaks and frozen water drips to blooming lands and beautiful greens, the change of life from winter to spring depicts ‘Hope and Life’. Representing “the Power” and “the Nature” in action. It is not a display of ‘Pleasure and Beauty’ alone; but also, a show of ‘Danger and Survive’ in “the dramatic climatic upheavals” (Source: Free Documentary – Nature, 2022)

Home to a diverse range of animal and plant species that thrive through seasonal changes and the games of life. These environments offer breathtaking views, from Alpine hares playing on a bed of ice to shiny frogs jumping in the light, and from vultures climbing vertical deserts (cliffs) to eagles frightening the dancing kids (Alpine ibex baby goats) playing in the ice before it melts into lush green lands in springtime. These views (featured in the Nat Geo documentary) can be both breathtaking and nail-biting, but they all showcase the resilience of the natural world.

Sounds of the arrival of spring season in the Alps are rough and harsh, as the huge ice rocks melt and disappear into the splashing rivers and splendid noisy waterfalls. While such sights can be mesmerizing to onlookers, there is a battle for life for the inhabitants in the heart of the Alps. One marmot was lucky to have a narrow escape, surviving an eagle catch, the other succumbed to becoming a bite! These silent moments remind one of the connectedness of everything the EARTH carries through the balance of power and life in place – the ecosystem in equilibrium, “the circle of life”.

Turning Point

Nature sometimes also turns out to be a nightmare and a life-long trauma. Geological and climatic changes resulting in floods, quakes, lightning, and fumes can bring harsh and hard experiences for many. Yet, the grim pains of the sufferers and the rescuers have hope for miracles in “urgent biophilia”, a phenomenon that Tidball (2012) explains where humans seek immediate interaction with nature to enhance their resilience and efforts to aid recovery and restoration from catastrophes or sudden life change.

Disasters can bring about life-changing circumstances for the survivors, caregivers, or rescuers and offer a transformational and growth experience through nature-based interactions for individuals to adapt themselves and gear up to face adverse moments; and emerge stronger than ever before! Nonetheless painful, rough, and despairing; there is hope for life and a better tomorrow.
